Serengeti Walking Safari
Duration 1 day

Step out of the vehicle and explore the Serengeti ecosystem on foot with an armed ranger and expert naturalist guide.

A walking safari in the Serengeti strips away the barrier of the vehicle and places you directly into the ecosystem on its own terms. Accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger and one of our senior naturalist guides, you will walk through the Central Serengeti bush for approximately two to three hours, covering four to six kilometres at a relaxed pace that allows for close observation of the environment.

The experience is fundamentally different from a game drive. On foot, you become acutely aware of the details that the vehicle obscures — the fresh tracks of a leopard pressed into the red earth, the alarm call of an Oxpecker indicating a nearby buffalo, the medicinal plants that the Maasai have used for centuries, the intricate engineering of a weaver bird's nest, and the complex social behaviour of dung beetles. Your guide will teach you to read the bush: identifying tracks, interpreting animal droppings, understanding wind direction, and recognising the subtle signs that indicate the presence of large predators nearby.

Safety is paramount. Walking safaris in the Serengeti are conducted in areas that have been scouted in advance by our team, and the armed ranger provides protection at all times. The walks typically take place in the morning when temperatures are comfortable and animal activity is high. While close encounters with dangerous game are avoided for safety, the thrill of knowing you are sharing the landscape with lions, elephants, and buffalo on equal footing is something no vehicle safari can replicate. Walking safaris are available for guests aged 16 and above and are subject to conditions on the ground.
