Sunset Game Drive on the Serengeti Plains

Duration 1 day

Chase the golden hour across the endless Serengeti grasslands with sundowner drinks as the African sun drops behind the western horizon.

Our afternoon game drive departs camp at approximately 3:30 pm, when the fierce midday heat begins to lift and the Serengeti comes back to life. Animals that have been resting in the shade of acacia trees and rocky outcrops start to stir, and the quality of light becomes extraordinary — warm, directional, and perfect for photography.

The route takes you through different terrain than the morning drive, ensuring maximum variety in both landscape and wildlife encounters. Your guide will seek out the big cats that are beginning their evening patrols: lions stretching and yawning as they prepare for the night's hunt, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds for a final opportunity before darkness falls, and serval cats emerging from the long grass to hunt rodents in the fading light.

As the sun nears the horizon, your guide selects a scenic spot — perhaps atop a kopje with a 360-degree view of the plains, or beside a seasonal waterhole where elephants are taking their evening drink — and sets up a sundowner station. Cold drinks, including local Tanzanian beer, South African wine, and fresh fruit juice, are served alongside savory snacks as you watch one of nature's great daily performances: a Serengeti sunset. The sky shifts through shades of peach, crimson, and violet, silhouetting flat-topped acacia trees against the horizon in the quintessential image of the African bush. The drive back to camp under the emerging stars is often accompanied by sightings of nocturnal species — spring hares bouncing through the headlights, nightjars sitting on the warm road, and the reflective eyes of genets in the undergrowth.
