What a Day at Our Serengeti Camp Looks Like

4 min read

From the pre-dawn wake-up call to the last embers of the campfire, here is how a typical day unfolds at Land of Nature Camp in the Central Serengeti.

What a Day at Our Serengeti Camp Looks Like

Every day in the Serengeti is different — the wildlife writes the script — but the rhythm of camp life follows a pattern that balances adventure, relaxation, and the deep peace of being in one of the wildest places on Earth.

5:30 AM — The Wake-Up

A gentle voice outside your tent and the aroma of freshly brewed Tanzanian coffee signal the start of the day. The sky is still dark, but the eastern horizon is beginning to glow. You dress in your pre-laid safari clothes — neutral colours, layers for the cool morning air — grab your binoculars and camera, and step onto the veranda. The bush is alive with sound: the high-pitched calls of fiscal shrikes, the chattering of starlings, and the deep, resonant whooping of hyenas heading back to their den after a night of hunting.

6:15 AM — Morning Game Drive

Your guide is waiting at the vehicle with a thermos of hot coffee and a box of homemade rusks. You head out into the Serengeti as the first rays of sunlight strike the kopjes and turn the dew-covered grass to gold. The morning drive is focused on predator activity — this is when lions, cheetahs, and leopards are most active. Your guide navigates toward the Seronera Valley, scanning the trees for roosting leopards and the open plains for the telltale shape of a cheetah on a termite mound. Every drive is different. Today it might be a leopard carrying her kill into an acacia tree, or a cheetah coalition chasing a Thomson's gazelle across the short grass.

10:00 AM — Bush Breakfast

Your guide selects a scenic spot — perhaps beside a hippo pool, or under a massive fig tree overlooking the plains — and unpacks a full breakfast. Freshly baked bread, tropical fruit, eggs, sausages, juice, and more Tanzanian coffee. You eat surrounded by the Serengeti, with the sounds of the bush as your background music.

11:00 AM — Return to Camp

Back at camp, the rest of the morning is yours. Some guests read on their veranda, others take a nap, and photographers review the morning's images. The camp has a small library of wildlife books and field guides for those who want to identify the species they have seen. A late-morning tea or coffee is available in the lounge area.

1:00 PM — Lunch

A relaxed lunch is served in the open-air dining area. The menu varies daily — fresh salads, grilled meats, Tanzanian dishes, and always seasonal fruit. The midday heat is the quiet time in the Serengeti; animals and humans alike take the opportunity to rest.

3:30 PM — Afternoon Game Drive

As the heat eases, you head out again. The afternoon light in the Serengeti is legendary — warm, golden, and perfect for photography. Your guide takes a different route from the morning, seeking out the areas where animal activity picks up as the day cools. Elephants move toward water, lion prides begin to stir, and the grazers resume feeding. As the sun approaches the horizon, your guide finds a scenic spot for sundowners — cold drinks and snacks served against a backdrop of a Serengeti sunset that will live in your memory forever.

7:00 PM — Dinner Under the Stars

Back at camp, the lanterns are lit and the campfire is crackling. A hot shower washes away the dust of the day. Dinner is a three-course affair served by lantern light in the dining area, accompanied by conversation about the day's sightings and the sounds of the nocturnal Serengeti. After dinner, guests gather around the campfire for a nightcap and stargazing — the Milky Way arches overhead with a clarity that seems impossible to anyone accustomed to city skies.

9:30 PM — Goodnight, Serengeti

An askari escorts you to your tent with a torch. You climb into bed, tuck the mosquito net under the mattress, and listen. The Serengeti night is never silent — distant lion roars, the yelping of jackals, the rhythmic chorus of frogs. You fall asleep knowing that just beyond the canvas wall, one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet is unfolding in the darkness.
